The Arc’s First Annual Family Dinner and Adult Open House, held at The Courim Center, was a rousing success! Clients from all of the agency’s adult programs were invited, along with their families, to attend this special evening filled with food, fun and facts.

On Wednesday evening, May 27, nearly 70 attendees enjoyed an Italian feast, games and tours of the facility as they had the opportunity to become more intimately involved with The Arc and all it offers. Program directors from each of the agency’s adult programs, as well as Kimberly McCarten, The Arc’s Executive Director, spoke with families about the many accomplishments achieved by their loved ones. Representatives from the Agency for Persons with Disabilities were on hand to share valuable information, and a dental hygienist who specializes in individuals with disabilities offered free dental screenings, handed out toothbrushes and spoke about appropriate dental care for the clients served by The Arc.

The evening also gave families the chance to share their feelings, nearly all of which echoed the same sentiment: amazement at the progress made by their loved one. One client’s sister (who is also her guardian) shared that her sister has finally come out of her shell as a result of developing positive relationships at The Arc. The mother of another program participant marveled at the change in her daughter, including her new-found independence, the scope of things she has learned and her desire to try a variety of new activities that have never interested her before.

As part of the tour, families visited the Art d’Arc Artisan Program, and some families even purchased the one-of-a-kind mosaics made by their children. Others stopped to appreciate the new gardens and exercise path that have been created at The Arc as part of the agency’s health initiative.

This very special evening was the first of many that will be held in the coming months to help deepen the relationships between the agency and its clients’ families as well as to introduce new families to The Arc and its wide range of offerings for individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. If you know of someone who could benefit from The Arc’s programs, please call 561-842-3213 to arrange a personal tour.
