Riviera Beach, Fla. (February 14, 2024) – March is National Disability Awareness Month, a time to celebrate the diversity, talents, and lives of people with disabilities. The Arc of Palm Beach County supports individuals with disabilities year-round through programs that inspire possibilities at all stages of their lives.
One of The Arc’s life-changing programs is its Employment Services Program. The Arc matches adult clients with disabilities to meaningful, transformative work opportunities with Palm Beach County businesses seeking enthusiastic and dedicated employees. Local businesses include Boarderie, Palm Beach Marriott Singer Island Beach Resort & Spa, and Otis Elevator. Currently, 70 clients with The Arc are employed and 280 clients are receiving employment training to strengthen their job-readiness skills.
WHO: A client with The Arc of Palm Beach County, Jackie Applebaum, participates in the Employment Services Program and is one of its success stories. Jackie began working with The Arc’s mobile work crew at Otis Elevator in 2016, and continues to work there as a part-time employee. She has shown the disability community how employment creates a tremendous source of pride, achievement, and self-worth. Jackie is a role model who is breaking barriers every day for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. In recognition of the skills she acquired through the Employment Services Program, Jackie earned an appointment as a new Self-Advocate Board Member on The Arc of Florida Board of Directors.
